Rescuing History from Srivijaya: There Was No Srivijaya

In a few days the first part of a 2-part article which I have written on “Srivijaya” will be published.

In fact, this article deconstructs the idea, held by scholars for the past century, that there ever was a kingdom by that name. Instead, it argues that much of the information in Chinese sources that has been used to develop the history of “Srivijaya” is actually about “Kambuja,” and in particular, the historical kingdom based at Angkor.

The two parts of this long article contain a lot of dense and detailed discussions of information in texts in Chinese, Siamese and Khmer. This is necessary for establishing the evidence for my argument. However, it makes for tough reading.

This video here, by contrast, is intended to introduce the general topic in a way that makes it easier to see the “big picture.” For those interested in the details, however, they will be provided in the two parts of the article.

The article is entitled “Rescuing History from Srivijaya: The Fall of Angkor in the Ming Shilu” and will be published in China and Asia: A Journal in Historical Studies (CAHS).
