Content Asian Studies
I strongly believe that the world of Asian Studies/area studies is not doing well.
While there are many factors that help explain “the decline of Asian Studies,” the biggest are globalization and the Digital Revolution.
In these videos I talk about the ways in which Asian Studies is failing to adapt to the changes that globalization and the Digital Revolution have set in motion, and I also suggest ways to move forward.
I created a “flash blog” in 2018 called Content Asian Studies and an accompanying Content Asian Studies Facebook Page in order to communicate some of my ideas.
These days I still occasionally post on this topic, as Asian Studies continues to face the same challenges.

Like all other unsuccessful movements, Content Asian Studies started with frustration, some sarcasm and a MANIFESTO.
It then went on to look at the issues a bit more deeply.
The Content Asian Studies discussion then turned to wide range of issues relating to the decline of Asian Studies and the need for change in higher education.

Lương Kim Định was a fascinating thinker. While I ultimately find his ideas to be flawed, it’s fascinating to look at how and why he came up with the ideas that he did.
Searching for the Trưng Sisters and Rain
These are updated versions of videos that I originally made in 2014.
A lot of people have heard of the Trưng Sisters’ Rebellion, but few people know that they were later worshiped as rain deities.
These were among the first videos that I ever made, and I was in some ways trying to emulate Anthony Bourdain’s style, but I quickly realized that I just don’t have that guy’s style. . .
Nonetheless, I see these videos as my homage to Bourdain.

Interrogating Đào Duy Anh
Ok, I get it, academia is a “profession” and professions have “rules”. . . but I get tired of rules. . . especially when times change, people change, societies change, etc., but the rules don’t.
Why do we have to keep doing everything the same way forever?
Personally, I don’t like to “compartmentalize” my life by separating scholarship from creativity. Yes, I write and publish “professional” articles, but I also like to play around with the academic ideas I learn and to think creatively with them.
The videos to the right here are an example of this. I was researching about Vietnamese historian Đào Duy Anh (1904-1988), and then I started to think about the general times that he lived in (the Cold War, the Vietnam War, etc.).
In American popular culture of the 1960s-1980s, the global political dynamics of the Cold War were highlighted in James Bond movies.
So I decided to use the form and style of James Bond movies to think about Đào Duy Anh in the context of the global forces that were transforming the world at that time.
The videos are meant to be both humorous and serious.

A Conversation with Art Curator Nguyễn Như Huy
We met with curator Nguyễn Như Huy (of art space Zero Station/Ga 0 in Hồ Chí Minh City) in 2017 to talk about his participation in that year’s Engaging With Vietnam conference. As is always the case in talking with Như Huy, our conversation covered many fascinating topics – from philosophy, to linguistics, to literature, to art. In December at the Engaging With Vietnam conference Như Huy will curate an exhibit and will host an artists’ talk on “touring as creating.”

In the summer of 2015 we met with TS Trần Trọng Dương and had a conversation that addressed the following topics (and others as well): fieldwork, the way that the image of the Hung kings has been employed in modern times, the ways in which the past has been used to promote the image of people who have sacrificed for the nation, the image of traitors in the writing of history, and the effort of some Vietnamese scholars to interpret the past in ways that they hope will distance Vietnamese culture from Chinese culture.

Popular Culture in the Free Chinese World
In much of the period from the 1950s to 1980s (or so), if you went from Honolulu to Hong Kong or Taipei, and then on to Saigon, Bangkok or Singapore you would have seen things in those cities that were similar.
Certain styles of architecture, for instance.
One reason why these similarities existed was because of the connections of ethnic Chinese.
A lot of the traces of that time and world have now been destroyed by more recent development, but traces of it still remain.
It is a world that I refer to as “the Free Chinese world,” because it was a connected world of ethnic Chinese outside of Communist China.
