Hupmobile advertisement from 1930s Singapore.

When I first saw this ad I thought it said “Humpmobile” and I couldn’t stop laughing. “Why would someone name a car a Humpmobile?” I wondered. “What, does it have an extra large back seat or something?” Then I stopped laughing when I realized that it was “Hupmobile” and not “Humpmobile,” and I started to wonder what it was in my subconcious which led me to first read this name in that manner. . .

In any case, the second setence is pretty crazy – “To this condition, unusual in a business so changing as the automobile industry, Hupmobile’s great achievement is mainly due, for, after all, it is pride of the maker in his product that is your assurance.” As for pride of the advertiser in straight-forward language. . .
