Bacon and Chinese Servants in Colonial Singapore

Cold Storage advertisement from 1930s Singapore

This advertisement is from the 1930s. I like ads like this because they can tell us a lot about the time and place in which they were produced by the things they take for granted – like having a Chinese servant in a uniform work for you. This servant is running off to remind (I presume) another servant to get bacon from a company called Cold Storage. “Mem says be sure it’s COLD STORAGE BACON!” Now that Singapore is no longer a British colony, the days of Chinese servants are long gone. Today you would never see a scene like this in Singapore. Instead, these days Chinese homeowners simply call their Filipino maids on their cell phones to remind them where to by bacon. . .
