I came across this advertisement for “Coconut Tree” cigarettes in a newspaper from Singapore in 1930. I like the design of the characters. It says, reading from right to left, “Economical with a superior taste – Coconut Tree brand cigarettes.” It also has “coconut tree” in Malay on the package.

I don’t know much about art, but as far as I know, this represent the Art Deco style. The use of geometric shapes like this was an important part of that movement. So this is Art Deco meets Malay coconut trees via Chinese cigarettes. . . If I had lived in Singapore in 1930, I definitely would have smoked these and felt very cool and modern.
