A Chinese Man’s Smoke-Filled Day

Chinese advertisement for cigarettes in 1929 Singapore.

This is an advertisement from 1929 Singapore. It says at the bottom that “There is no time in the day when you can do without them.”

The pictures then relate what this man does on a given day. Starting at the bottom and moving clockwise you have get up, eat breakfast, read the paper, do work, meet guests, go out, have lunch, go for a walk, read a book, enjoy some entertainment, engage in tea talk, and rest.

What a day! You definitely need to rest after a long day like this.

In keeping with the familial theme of the previous post, it is interesting to note how he only spends time with his wife at lunch. All of the rest of the day is spent either alone or with “the boys.”
