Tobacco Nationalism in Colonial Singapore

1930s Singapore cigarette advertisement

“Produced by Chinese – Suitable for Chinese to Smoke”

That’s what the main caption says here. In the 1930s there were similar ads in China. Companies used nationalism to attract customers. Save the Chinese by smoking cigarettes made by Chinese. . .

great title – “Tobacco Nationalism”. this suggests a fascinating avenue to develop, the connection between consumption and nationalism. Do I sense an article coming out of this? 😀

Maybe if I didn’t have to sleep I would have time to do so. This is a topic which people who study China have at least mentioned. I remember seeing someone talk about it in a dissertation a few years back. It must be published by now, but I can’t recall the name of the person or the title of the dissertation. It just dawned on me though, I wonder if this happened in other parts of the world. That would make for an interesting world/comparative history article.
