There was a wave of scholarship in the DRV in the 1960s on the Hùng kings. This culminated in a book which Văn Tân, Nguyễn Linh, Lê Văn Lan, Nguyễn Đổng Chi and Hòang Hưng jointly authored and published in 19701 called The Period of the Hùng Kings: History, Economics, Politics, Culture, Society. That book starts with the following statement:
“In the history of the nation(ality) of Vietnam, those people who established great merit in building the country, protecting the people and resisting foreign invasion have all been remembered with gratitude by our people. One of the days of remembrance which every patriotic person from South to North knows, and which has existed from centuries past to the present, is the Death Anniversary of the Hùng King Ancestors.”
If the Death Anniversary of the Hùng Kings is so important to the Vietnamese people, why isn’t it mentioned in the Đại Việt sử ký toàn thư or the Khâm định Việt sử thong giám cương mục?
