Thank you, Sharifah. Yes, obviously I love old advertisements. What fascinates me is not necessarily the products themselves (although some are very interesting), but the unconscious ideas which we can see in the advertisements. In this one on cocoa, for instance, we can see the importance of the “bourgeoise family.” Singapore was for decades a “coolie town,” but by the 1930s that was changing, and this ad captures that perfectly.
