1939 Thai textile advertisement

“Lion Brand Textiles

good fabric – clear colors -various colors

the colors are guaranteed not to fade

Ladies should wear textiles by

Lion Brand

sold everywhere”

This is from 1939, which is right when Prime Minister Phibun Songkhram started to issue his “cultural edicts” (rathaniyom) to “modernize” the Thai. Some of those edicts pertained to clothing, and it is clear from pictures that during WW II and certainly afterwards many women wore Western-style skirts. I can’t remember if Phibun ordered women to wear skirts. I don’t think so. In any case, customs changed, so whether people realized it or not at the time, advertisements like this for the textiles which were used for women’s lower garments were soon to disappear.
