Cigarette advertisement from colonial Vietnam

I think the picture and title say it all. What else can one say?

Where did it come from? What is the date of this? It is funny because I find this advertisement like a picture that people often put in alters. The two decorative borders stand alongside the picture seem to make that effect.

It’s far-fetched, but ducks are known for being in groups … of ducks and following other… ducks. It must have something to do with advertising and smoking addictive substances.

It took me a while, but I think I finally get what you’re saying. Correct me if I’m wrong, but you’re saying that this advertisement is using a “duck strategy.” By showing a duck smoking a cigarette, people will subconciously act like a duck and emulate the other duck. Is that correct? If so, then that’s genius! In fact I’m smoking and quacking right now as I write this. I wasn’t sure why I suddenly started to engage in those two acts. But now I see. . . QUACK!!!

A Chinese journalist compared suicidal people to ducks. I just drew the connection from there. To “duck” in Asia is to “copy-cat” in the West. I just need to find a “Cigarettes Chat” to prove this point!

Oh I see. Well, now that my misunderstanding of your comment has me thinking about subliminal duck messages, I’m still going to stick with that (warped) idea as I like the concept of people being subconsciously manipulated by ducks. That would make a great sci-fi movie by the way.
