Laxative gum advertisement from the Philippines in 1940

This is an advertisement from a paper in the Philippines from around 1940. The Philippines at that time was of course an American colony, and the papers at that time are filled with advertisements for American products. I like this image. This girl looks like she is very happy, and how could she not be consdering that she is chewing gum which “does its work in the intestines where it is needed.”

Maybe this is a silly question, but where have chewing gum laxatives gone? It seems like a pretty good delivery system form something that you do indeed need from time to time…

Maybe laxative gum is just too dangerous. After all, it’s easy to offer an unsuspecting person a piece of “gum,” but it’s quite a bit more difficult to get her/him to readily consume a tablet. Boy, think of all the fun you could have with laxative gum. . .
