I came across these pictures form the cover of the magazine Viet Nam from the early 1960s. That magazine was published in English by the North Vietnamese government as a kind of advertisement for the country.

Several of the photos on the cover were of young people. I’m posting some of them here to give a sense of the kind of image that this magazine sought to present.

Today is the 150th anniversary day Abraham Lincoln issued the Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation. I wonder why Lincoln tried hard to called back the Southern states? wasn’t it better to have TWO “united states”S?

I’d be ok with that. As it is, the country is basically divided in two. And as a result, nothing can get done. If there was one America for the Republicans and one for the Democrats and if people could chose which one they wanted to live in, then that would be great. People would just need to fight over who gets what.

it is likely that many people in America at this moment of history, unlike you, were not ok with that. If history looks the same everywhere, it would be boring.

yea, if history was the same it would be boring, but the way we look at the past always changes as we change in the present, and people in different societies change in different ways, so it will always remain interesting.

People in America are not ok with dividing the country? I don’t know. After the upcoming election, I bet the losing side will be willing to create their own country. . .

Tay Bui, come on, they had to get those people off the street so that the girl in the picture could concentrate on playing the cello. Don’t you know how hard it is to practice Tschaikovsky when you’ve got “street vendor trash” outside your window???
